• In my research, I aim at understanding rural–urban interaction, urbanization, and land use change in mountain environments. Sharing a historicist and morphogenetic landscape vision, I often combine empiricist and humanist approaches to explore how the material and nonmaterial dimensions of mountains influence the form, structure, function, and genesis of mountain settlements. Apart from purely academic research, I have a strong interest in transdisciplinarity, environmental planning, and sustainable development. My regional foci are on the central Andes—especially Peru—and the European Alps. More recently, I am also interested in the northern Apennines.
