• In my research, I aim at understanding mountain cities, their periurban and rural hinterlands, and rural–urban interactions. Core areas of interest are: (1) Mountains, human–environment interaction, and landscape theory and (2) Mountains, urbanization, and land use change. Sharing a historicist and morphogenetic vision, I often combine empiricist and humanist approaches. My regional foci are the central Andes—especially Peru—and the European Alps. More recently, I am also interested in the northern Apennines. Apart from purely academic research, I have a strong interest in applied geography, environmental planning, and urban and regional development.
